Macron dit "Non!"

Updated: Nov 14, 2021

As of Monday May 31, all the planning we have done has been thrown up in the air by M. Macron. Up until that point, Brits were able to have a 'compelling reason' to travel to France, which included the need to complete contractual obligations. The handover - to us of Missy Bear by Sunbird in Canet-en-Rousillon - would have constituted such a 'compelling reason' and Sunbird/Beneteau were happy to provide us with the necessary letters to get through border controls and onto the cross-channel ferry to France. However, basically M. Macron made a last minute change to the regulations and now Brits have been singled out for special restrictions, where we are not even allowed a 'compelling reason' to travel to France. This is all allegedly due to the 'Indian variant' currently found in the UK. [The variant is probably already in France, but the French have not got the resource to perform the amount of genome sequencing that we do in the UK.]

So, why don't we go into France via Spain? Well, the French have got that covered by insisting that non EU nationals must spend at least 14 days in any other EU country before entering France. So we would have to take a car load of stuff on the ferry to Santander, spend 14 days in Spain (or Andorra) and then cross into France with a negative PCR test and other declarations. And we would have to find a border guard at one of the road crossings to stamp, and so initiate, our France long term visa (so that we stop the Schengen clock at that point). That might be easier said than done.

So, we are looking at Plans B and C, which involve getting the boat delivered to Spain (Palma or Ginesta, near Barcelona) by a non-UK crew. We will have to post all our stuff to SAS (local contractor at the yard in Canet) to be put onto the boat. (Any I won't be able to store my car in Aubeterre; maybe time to sell it?)

It's possible that M. Macron will remove the restrictions before we go, but we cannot rely on that. Happy days...
